HTNS2011 Report and Awards
President's Report 2011
Nova Scotia has kept a steady membership of approximately 55 people, which has been the case for the last several years. Our website is a good source of information and is kept up to date. It can be found at www.htns.org
Three sanctioned Horse Trials were held in 2011. A competition was held at Central Nova in Truro in July, in August in Cape Breton at the Eastern Eventers site and at Hobby Horse Farm in the Annapolis Valley. All three offered up to Training level with entry numbers varying across the province.
HTNS held two clinics with a third having to be cancelled due to inclement weather and which we couldn't reschedule. The first was a Show Jumping clinic in June with Jen Hamilton, Level IV NCCP coach. This was well attended and attracted some Hunter/Jumper riders, given Jen's reputation. We also had a successful Cross-Country clinic with Andy Wadowski, Level III NCCP coach in July. There was a one day "Develop Your Eye" Eventing Dressage Judging clinic with Jo Young held at Central Nova in advance of a Dressage Show which Jo was judging. Seven people attended from NS & NB and are now able to offer their services for judging at Bronze level Horse Trials. Three Horse Trials members offered to be the test riders for the day, which worked out very well. This was organized by the Central Nova Horse and Pony Association.
Our members also had some opportunities to go to some unrecognized competitions. Hobby Horse Farm started the season off with a schooling horse trials in early June. Clay Hill Farm in Sheffield Mills held two schooling horse trials also, with one in late June and one in early October. These provide great opportunities for people who want to see what eventing is all about, for those with young horses or for those of us who are looking for a fun day out. Creamery Brook Stables in Brookfield, just outside Truro, held a Short Course competition in early September which proved to be a very good day and offered a type of competition new to Nova Scotia members.
Hobby Horse Farm held a "Fun Day" event on October 15th. The weather cooperated and everyone enjoyed activities such as Ideal Event Pace, Pick Your Best Five and Hunt Pairs. The focus of these is on proper pace and control in a fun environment. Mounted games followed in the afternoon.
A new group of people interested in Eventing in Cape Breton organized a two day clinic in late October with Alex Beaton, a Level I NCCP coach, in North Sydney at their Exhibition Grounds. She offered instruction in dressage, cross country jumping with the use of portable jumps and show jumping. The clinic was very well attended and they intend to have her come on a regular basis.
A highlight for some of our members will be their participation in a clinic with Ingrid Klimke, being held in Truro on November 5th & 6th. It is amazing that she is coming to Nova Scotia, her only clinic in North America this year. Five of our members have been chosen to ride in it, along with four eventers from NB and one from PEI.
HTNS was very excited to receive their portion of the Horse Trials Canada money and are now offering funding opportunities for cross country course upgrades and development. A grant application form and criteria has been developed and circulated. We are hopeful that work will start on a new course in the province in 2012 with help from this grant money and that the three existing courses will continue to be upgraded.
In closing, many thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors who have supported our organization and our competition sites. We couldn't do it without you!
Respectfully submitted,
Pam Macintosh
